Demetrius of Thessaloniki

Iconography:  Demetreus of Thessaloniki, the Great Martyr

Date: XIII century. The end of the 12th - the beginning of the 13th c.

Origin: From the lower Church of Demetrius of Thessaloniki of the Assumption Cathedral in Dmitrov, built in 1713. Discovered in 1919 by N.N.Pomerantsev.

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 156 cm, width 108 cm

St. Demetrius is depicted seated on a throne; with his left hand he holds a sheath and is pulling out the sword with his right. In the left upper corner is the blessing Christ, to the right is a flying angel carrying the martyr’s wreath to Demetrius.
