Fiery Ascension of Elijah the Prophet

In the center of the icons is the fiery ascension of Elijah the Prophet. In the left upper corner of the mullion is Jesus Christ in the clouds. The mullion also depicts scenes from the saint’s life: the raven feeding the saint in the wilderness, Elijah, in company with Elisha the Prophet, divides the waters of Jordan with his mantle, presentation of the angel to Elijah in the wilderness. The icon frame contains scenes from the saint’s life.

In the center of the icon is the figure of Prophet Elijah fed by the raven. Top upper corner represents the scene of the Fiery Ascension of the prophet to the skies.

The prophet standing before the Lord Sabaoth with a scroll in hand is portrayed in a three-quarter turn. The center of the icon is framed with a golden ornamental arc on small chiseled columns. The arc’s construction is reminiscent of a giant book head-piece or a magnificent carved portal of the Holy Gates. Side borders represent Bible scenes.

In the centre of the icon is the Prophet Elijah sitting against the background of the landscape. In his left hand he is holding a thin staff. Fragments of the Prophet Elijah’s life are also depicted in the background.The Appearance of the Angel in the desert, as well as Elijah and Elisha crossing the Jordan on dry land. In the right upper corner the Prophet Elijah is shown in his Fiery Ascent. In the left upper corner is the Lord of Sabaoth in the clouds.

The figure of the Prophet Elijah sitting against a rocky landscape is depicted in the central part of the icon. He seems to be listening to something with his left hand resting on the ankle, and his right hand raised to the ear. In the upper margin is a seven-figured half-length Deesis terminating in the Apostles Peter and Paul. Side and bottom borders show fourteen scenes from the prophet’s life.

Elijah the Prophet is portrayed seated on a stone near the dark cavern, his head put on his right hand. The river flow is depicted at his feet, behind his back are high grassy rocky mountains. On one of the pinnacles seats the raven with a slice of bread in its nib. Prophet Elijah is depicted turning to the raven. The borders show the scenes from the life of Elijah the Prophet.
